Scholarship program recognizes local students in the Maui community
Along with reinforcing our passion for golf, The Sentry gives us a unique opportunity to make a tangible impact in the Maui community.
Through the Sentry Insurance Foundation, we’ve expanded our Sentry® Scholars program to Maui. We offer annually renewable scholarships to students attending University of Hawai’i institutions. Our goal is to encourage higher learning and ongoing engagement with the students’ home island.
A commitment to the community
“The fact that we can grow students and keep them here on island to become professionals contributing to their communities is so important, now more than ever before, it seems,” says Dr. Jocelyn Romero Demirbag, Ed.D., director of development for the University of Hawai’i Foundation.
Current scholarship recipients represent several disciplines and interests. As of 2021, our Sentry Scholars on Maui include students majoring in liberal arts, biology, creative media, pre-medicine, veterinary assisting, business administration, and Hawaiian studies.
A tradition of supporting education
We modeled the Sentry Scholars program at the University of Hawai’i after scholarships we offer in Wisconsin, where we’ve maintained our home office for more than a century.
The program began in 1964. Each year, we offer higher education scholarship opportunities at institutions throughout the state, including 16 scholarships at the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point near the Sentry home office. In total, more than 200 students per year receive some level of financial scholarship from the Sentry Insurance Foundation, with just under $300,000 dedicated to supporting higher education.
A bright future for Hawaii
As we enjoy the 2022 edition of the The Sentry, we look forward to extending this opportunity to more young Hawaiians—and seeing the positive impact of their continued community involvement.
