The Preserve is a vital freshwater source for West Maui.
Stevens Point, Wis. (August 20, 2024)—To honor those impacted by the unprecedented Maui wildfire disaster one year ago, the Sentry Insurance Foundation is donating $150,000 to the Pu’u Kukui Watershed Preserve to support the organization’s critical work as the primary water source for the west side of the island.
A portion of Sentry’s donation will be dedicated to planting native trees in honor of the 102 lives lost, the two individuals still missing, and the nearly 8,000 survivors of the disaster. As the venue for the PGA TOUR's The Sentry, Maui holds special significance for Sentry, which has served as the title sponsor since 2018.
“The team at Pu’u Kukui Watershed Preserve works tirelessly to care for their water, land, and community,” said Pete McPartland, Sentry Chairman and CEO.
“We’re proud to support their meaningful mission, which is as noble and impactful as any cause we’ve embraced. We also feel it’s important to honor the strength, hope, and resilience shown by the Maui community, which we consider a Sentry community—our ohana,” added McPartland.
Since signing on as the title sponsor of The Sentry, Sentry has been committed to being active, year-round participants in the island’s well-being. Over the past year, Sentry has contributed $2 million toward wildfire relief and recovery, including $1 million for the Sentry Mālama Nā Keiki initiative to provide mental health support to children who lived through the trauma of the fires.
In 2022, Sentry launched the Connected Communities initiative to foster collaboration between Maui and Stevens Point, Wisconsin, where Sentry is headquartered. The initiative has brought together local governments, university chancellors, United Ways, Boys & Girls Clubs, and even brewery owners to discuss best practices, tackle shared challenges, and collaborate on several initiatives.
